Editorial Maldon Life November 2021

Well finally we all seem to be getting back to a greater normality, having held our AGM in October with our Chair Neil Martin into his second year. We are still needing more committee members ( unfortunately we’ve lost a couple recently) so if you’d like to do a little something for the community please come along and join us at our next meeting on Thursday 11th November at 7.30pm. in the jubilee Lounge. You will be made very welcome.

Meanwhile the centre is getting busier and many of our previous groups have now returned but of course we are keen to ensure that everyone remains safe. Particularly as COVID 19 is so prevalent. To that end, we would ask everyone using the centre to remember to keep a safe distance from others, wear masks if possible and continue to regularly wash and sanitise hands.

One of the events being held at the centre is when ‘The Friary Pre School’ are holding a Table top sale on Saturday 13th November1.30 – 4pm. If you’d like to reserve a table they are just £5. Remember places are limited. To book your table kindly contact by email : denise.holden@essex.gov.uk

If you’d like to attend the entrance fee is just 50p with all proceeds going to The National Autistic Society a very worthy cause.

Having successfully held our first quiz night back ( after lockdown) in September we are delighted to remind you that our Xmas quiz is taking place on 20th November. Starting at 8 pm as usual we are once again restricting the number of teams, to ensure everyone’s safety so you will need to pre – book. Some of you have already done so already, so if you’d like to come along and join in the festivities, please book soon. You can either call me on 07823777201 or email me on Raymentdeb@aol.com. If you have to leave a message on my phone please leave a name, contact number and number of people you wish to book for.

Because it’s the Xmas quiz we’ll have a bumper raffle. ( tickets will be available to purchase on entry). This is to ensure we minimise contact. Please don’t sit down until you have paid. Entry will be as always, just £4 a person for the over 16s. Under 16s free. Kevin Briggs will be our quizmaster with 100 questions for us all. Then of course there’s a joker to play on one of the rounds that you think might suit your teams knowledge. It’s always thoroughly enjoyable and of course there will be 6 bottles of wine for the winning team with a small consolation prize for the team with the least number of points on the night. Just a little something to sweeten the moment! Don’t forget to bring along your goodies and nibbles to eat and drink including glasses. Pens are needed although Kevin provides quiz answer sheets. It’s the perfect way to get in the Xmas mood!

Don’t forget Kevin also holds a number of quizzes locally midweek if you’re a keen quizzer, at a couple of local pubs including The Carpenters Arms and The Sunny Sailor, both in Maldon, dates and details will be available on the evening.

On that note I look forward to hearing from you if you need to book for the quiz and hope to see you there.

Editorial Maldon Life September 2021

Well we’re back from a short shutdown towards the end of August and the centre is back up to scratch even whilst it was in pretty good shape prior. Thank-you to Duncan and Jim for their efforts with the hard work as usual.

The past couple of years have seen plenty of changes with COVID-19 impacting everyone in one shape or form and of course lockdowns during that period, have really restricted what we can all do. It has meant that sadly some of our clients have decided to retire or stop holding their classes/groups due to everything being so difficult to run, whilst others are now using the opportunity to start up new or expand their offerings and join us here at West Maldon Community Centre as restrictions relax.

One of those businesses is the Dawn Payne Academy of Dance. Dawn is an ex professional ballet dancer with over 40 years experience being a Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. She offers classes in Cecchetti Classical Ballet, Jazz Modern and Tap to children of all abilities offering those who wish to do so the opportunity to take Cecchetti Clasical ballet exams.

We are delighted to announce that from Tuesday 31st August Dawn has started offering her Dance classes on a weekly basis as follows with the first trial session free:-

3.45pm. Infant Ballet, 3-7 years

4.15pm. Infant Modern 3-7 years/Junior Modern 8-11 years

4.45pm. Infant Tap 3-7 years/Junior Tap 8-11 years

5.15pm. Junior Ballet 8-11 years.

Dancing is such a joyous activity, it improves fitness, deportment, grace and of course helps to build confidence. Children just love it, often dancing well into their adult years. To start learning dance early is a gift that sets you up for life.

Dawn holds shows at the Towngate Theatre Basildon where her students have the opportunity to perform. Her next shows are scheduled for April 23rd, 24th and 30th April 2022. What child doesn’t want that opportunity?

If you would like your child to join Dawns classes or indeed have any queries kindly contact Dawn on either 01621 773753 / 07541 229828 or email dawnedwin@tiscali.co.uk.

Alternatively her website address is http://www.dawnpaynedance.co.uk

Don’t forget if you have a local issue you would like to bring to Independent Councillor Flo Shaughnessy’s attention she holds her surgery here at the Centre on the 1st Saturday of each month. Call in and see her in the Jubilee Lounge between 10 and 12 noon.

Finally this month we are holding our first quiz night (post lockdown) on the 4th September at 8pm.(Saturday). Don’t forget to call me if you’d like to book a table. We are having a maximum of 8 teams for our first one. Tel Debbie on 07823777201 to book or email me at Raymentdeb@aol.com

Editorial Maldon Life June 2021

Well having opened up once again and the committee having held a face to face meeting in May rather than a zoom meeting , it finally feels as if we are returning back to some semblance of normality. Now we look forward to welcoming back many of our old clients ( if we haven’t already seen you) and hopefully many new ones.

Naturally during the closure period there have been changes, with Jim our facilities manager having stepped back from his additional duties. We would like to thank him for all the years he ran the centre so ably. We consider ourselves fortunate that he has kindly agreed to remain part of the caretaking team.

Following the use of the centre as a COVID 19 testing site by Essex County Council, and prior to the resumption of hires, the caretakers led by Duncan, our new facilities manager have again been making sure the centre is back in tiptop condition. In particular the floor in the sports hall has been stripped back and revarnished so it is once again in tip top condition. An air conditioning unit has been repaired, with cleaning of course a priority throughout the whole centre. This means that our usual shutdown period this year will be reduced considerably. Good news for hirers.

We are also delighted to advise that Councillor Flo Shaughnessy will also be resuming her surgery held on 1st Saturday in the month on June 5th. So if you have any issues or concerns you would like to discuss, pop along and see her in the Jubilee Lounge. Flo will be available between 10 and 12 noon.

More good news awaits us in the form of our Quiz nights. Yes, they are resuming at last with our first one due on Saturday 4th September. We are grateful that Kevin Briggs our wonderful quizmaster will once again be fronting the quiz despite all his recent success as a DJ with the Caroline Community radio station 94.7 FM serving Maldon and the local district.

So please get that date in your diaries. We are currently looking at setting more dates and will let you know as soon as they are available.

So looking forward and obviously subject to any rules laid down by the government in the interim please be aware that we now have dates available where the centre is available for hire. Lisa our bookings manager will be delighted to hear from you. Remember that the office is not manned full time, leave a contact number and message and we will get back to you as soon as we are able. Or alternatively email us on bookings@wmcc.org.uk.

We look forward to seeing or hearing from you soon. It’s good to be back.

Our next exciting Quiznight is being held this month on Saturday 14th March. Starting at 8pm Kevin Briggs, Quizmaster will be commencing his 100 questions for the evening and we’ll be enjoying the battle of the wits or the witless! (In my case). Anyone can join in. Teams of up to 8 people welcome at a cost of only £4 per head. Under 16’s free. Bring your own drinks and nibbles for a great night out. We enjoy two breaks during the evening ( where Kevin marks the papers) and we get to relax, eat and drink. So if you fancy a good night out, come along, no need to book. We’d love to see you.

Now for some hot off the press news. The Centre will be holding a Tabletop Sale in the main sports hall at the centre on Sunday 5th April. With table hire available for just £10 what an opportunity to go through those cupboards and wardrobes as you spring clean and sort out any items you want to declutter and make a little money at the same time. Why wait for Boot-sales to open and for the weather to be kind enough to warrant standing outdoors at this time of year. Book your table and know you’ll in the dry and warm along with your buying customers. Plus there’s plenty of free parking and no getting bogged down in mud afterwards. What’s not to like?

If you’d like to book a table or have a query regarding this then please call me on 07823777201 or email me on tables@wmcc.org.uk

Table setup will commence at 12.45pm on the day with doors opening to purchasers at 1.30pm for 3 hours. What a great way to spend your Sunday afternoon.

Get in touch asap. if you’d like to book and ensure you get a table.

There will of course be refreshments available for purchase to enhance the experience.

This month we’d also like to tell you about one of our regular clients at the Centre, Maldon Orchestra. They are are a thriving community orchestra which has been active in Maldon for over 70 years. They currently have 56 members of all abilities who meet and play together on a Friday night. They have a full concert diary for 2020 with seven completely different concerts ranging from free concerts at several locations, two outside concerts during the summer, a performance at the Chelmsford Cathedral in June for SSAFA Essex and a show with the Maldon Drama Group in Maldon in November in aid of the David Randall Foundation.

Their repertoire is as varied as their concerts as they don't play typically long classical pieces. Instead they play show tunes, pop, swing, abridged classical, film and jazz. They occasionally invite a choir to join performances and this year will be sharing concerts with the Colchester Military Wives Choir and the Chelmsford Male Voice Choir.

Maldon Orchestra don't charge for their involvement in concerts so that any monies raised can go to local charities using concerts as an opportunity for their players to experience performing to a live audience.

In 2018 they were awarded the Pride of Essex Award - Team of Pride which is testament to the team effort which drives their success. They are fortunate to have a hugely talented Musical Director - Ron Bewers who in conjunction with an enthusiastic and supportive Management Committee drive the Orchestra’s growth and development.

New members are always welcome to enquire directly to the Maldon Orchestra via their website MaldonOrchestra.co.uk . Whilst the Orchestra is full in a few sections they would like to hear from anyone who can play an orchestral instrument so get in touch if you’d like to know more.

Alternatively if you are just interested in hearing them play, visit their website for more details of their performance schedule for 2020.

See you next month.

Article published in the February Maldon Life Magazine

Well the January quiz went off with a bang with all nine teams present keen to start the New Year of 2020 with a good performance and show Kevin how much some of them had been swatting up since November. Did it all go to plan? If you follow this column you probably know.

First round as usual was a general knowledge round. Only one team scored maximum points and that was “penultimately number 9”. “The good neighbours” however, playing their joker moved into an early lead with 18 points and another 5 teams scored 9 points too! The lowest score was 6 earned by the team” Younger Achievers” but with an average age, far less than the rest of the room and age weighted questions that was still a good score.

Round two however saw things fall apart for well, pretty much everyone. Kevin likes to test us from time to time and this was one of them. You had to list the 10 most populated cities/towns in Scotland. Easy? NO! Maximum score was 5, but no one scored less than a 4 so all was not lost.

Round 3 was a really strange round where all the answers had to start with the letter T. “ Easy “ three teams thought, we’ll play our jokers, because that’s a great clue. WRONG! Those teams were “All fired up, Underachievers and Penultimately number 9”. “All fired up” got a home run with maximum points doubled. Underachievers scored a home goal with just 6 points doubled. (An early start to their demise!) Penultimately scored slightly better with 14 points earned.

So how would round 4 treat us? It was a 5 and 5 round. Name the five most populated countries in the world and 5 star signs with just three vowels in. Not as easy as it sounds! Not one team managed maximum points but ‘Late Again’ playing their joker dropped just one point earning them 18 points and three other teams scored 9 too.

So with sheets handed in for marking here’s how things stood for the top three teams so far.

In first place were “All fired up on 43 points ( out of a possible 50) “Late Again” were in second place just 1 point behind, and in third place were “Good Neighbours” a little adrift on 38. The Younger achievers were however bringing up the rear at this stage on just 26 points but no joker played.

Having eaten some of our goodies during the first break we settled back down for round 5 which was mainly about Films and TV. Just one team scored a 10 that was “All fired up”. They clearly were, lowest score was a 4 by “Weekenders” but “Clones” entering the fray scored a 9 whilst playing their joker. Not bad at all!

Round 6 was based on Foods, Kevin gave us letters and numbers and you had to work out popular or well known meals. Not as easy as it sounds! Or maybe it was as 7 teams scored maximum points and Young achievers playing their joker, propelled themselves up the table.

Round 7 was all about the events making up the decathlon. Three teams scored maximum “Clones” “All fired up”and “Weekenders. Didn’t they do well? With papers up for marking again it was time for raffle ticket sales and some more food and drink to feed and oil the brain. In 1st place remained “All fired up” on 73 points, still only 7 points dropped. Late again were still in second place joined by

“Clones” on the same number of 66 points.

Round 8 was a homophone clue round involving places in the UK. 7 teams were on the ball scoring maximum points, two playing their joker, “Weekenders and Forever Hopeful” and the remaining three just dropped a point so all did extremely well here.

Round 9 was about boroughs in London commencing with letters L-Z only. Now we were sorting everyone out and with scores ranging from 6 to 10 some were definitely challenged. Only three teams scored maximum points being “All fired up” “Forever Hopeful” and “Younger Achievers”.

So the final round another General Knowledge section was all important and yet not one team managed a perfect score. However 5 teams managed 9 points so would it be tight at the final countdown? In a word NO!

Winners as you’ve probably guessed were the terrific”All fired up”. Dropping just 9

Points out of a possible 110 they were truly worthy winners and streets ahead of the opposition. In second place came “Weekenders” on 95 points another excellent score. Third place went to “Forever Hopeful” who had every reason to be, earning 94 points. Fourth place went to the youngest team ‘Young Achievers’ with a superb performance earning them 91 points. I’m tipping them for future winners and they were aptly named. Fifth place went to “Clones, Late Again and Penultimately number 9” with a respectable 90 points. So in 8th place and 85 points placed “Good Neighbours”. In last place came yes; yours truly and the Underachievers, living up to our name and earning just 82 points out of a possible 110. We didn’t play our joker well in fact we didn’t do that well at all. We had a great time though!

Think you could give it a go? Our next quiz is on Saturday 14th March. Come along and give it a go.

Meanwhile there is plenty going on at the Centre. Don’t forget our Local Councillor, Flo Shaughnessy holds a regular Saturday Surgery in the Jubilee Lounge here at the Centre on the first Saturday of each month. Article published in the January 2020 Maldon Life Magazine.

The annual Christmas Party went very well once again with more than 50 children enjoying tea (served on environmental friendly reusable plates), together with the magic and entertainment provided by Papalarny The Magic Man who was superb of course. This was duly followed by a visit to Santa!

All the children were happy, getting excited waiting for Xmas day to arrive as you would expect, and were keen to share what they would like for Xmas.

The Community Association would like to thank Carly for taking over the running of the party this year and for all her hard work, her merry band of helpers, the caretakers who help set it all up and clear up afterwards, and of course Father Christmas without whom it would be a little less magical. Also a big thanks to the local supermarkets that helped by providing food for the party. To coin a phrase “ It’s a most wonderful time of the year”.

Don’t forget; Please Like our Facebook page so you can be the first to hear about next year’s event.

Now just a recap on next years quizzes as it’s nearly 2020, can you believe it?

Thereafter our Quiz night dates are:-

Saturday March 14th , Saturday May 9th , Saturday June 20th, September 19th, November 14th . All quizzes start promptly at 8pm.

Happy New Year from all of us here at West Maldon Community Centre.

Article to be published in the December 2019 Edition of Maldon Life

With the last quiz-night of 2019 being held on Saturday 16th November and with Kevin the Quizmaster less than healthy on the night there was all to play for. Would the Underachievers be able to repeat their September success or would they be deposed? Would Kevin get through the quiz unscathed? Indeed would anyone?

However before I start I must thank a few people for their help during the last 12 months.

First off comes Quizmaster Kevin, what a legend. We love the barracking and he sets great quizzes. Next comesTim, who sadly missed this months quiz but Thank-you to him for announcing the raffles most months and to Mike who occasionally locks up afterwards. My thanks also go to David and family who help out with raffle ticket sales or cover in my absence, Jim our fantastic Head caretaker who sets the tables out for us. Graham, Sue and Poppy who also help with raffle ticket sales when available. Thankyou also, to all of you who come along and support the Community Centre each quiz. Without you there wouldn’t be one. So have a great Xmas and hopefully we’ll see you in the New Year.

Here’s how it played out for the 8 teams involved.

Round 1 based on General Knowledge saw ‘The Ever hopefuls’ launch into an early lead by playing their joker and scoring 14 points out of a possible 20. Three others earned the same 7 points without jokers so it wasn’t the best start to the quiz ( but Underachievers only got 5. Oh dear, not a great start!)

Round 2 however saw a reverse in fortunes with an English Monarchs round, where you had to name 10 monarchs who were on the throne for over 30 years. ‘ Fuzzy Logic’ scored the maximum 10 along with ‘Everhopefuls’ and ‘Underachievers’ who by playing their joker ( and having Matt on their team) earned the maximum 20 points available putting them in 1st place.

Round 3 was all about City Nicknames and whilst this section was a little easier no team managed a 10 pointer, however some 6 teams earned 9 points including ‘Scrambled Eggs’, ‘Penultimately Number 9’, ‘Underachievers’, ‘5 go Quizzing’, ‘Everhopefuls’ and ‘Interlopers’. Resulting in first blood at marking going to the ‘Underachievers on 34 points, 2nd Place to ‘Everhopefuls’ on 33 points and 3rd place to ‘Penultimately Number 9 with 24 points.

Round 4 commenced with 5 questions on ABBA songs and 5 on Italy. I’m not sure of the connection but I did say Kevin wasn’t well! Haha… The lowest score achieved was an 8, the highest 9 points and four teams managed this. Penultimately Number 9’, ‘Underachievers’, ‘5 go Quizzing’, and ‘Everhopefuls’.

Round 5 saw 10 questions on European Countries and this time just three teams scored the maximum 10 points. ‘Scrambled Eggs’, ‘Underachievers’and ‘Everhopefuls’. No jokers played though.

Round 6 was making ten 4 letter words from a selection of letters and all had to contain the letter ‘M’ with each letter to be used once only. This was a resounding success with every team gaining the maximum 10 points. Well done everybody but especially well done to ‘Fuzzy Logic’ and ‘5 go Quizzing’ who played their jokers thus earning 20 points each.

Round 7 required us to name the 10 stations between Chelmsford and Liverpool Street and with just two teams scoring the maximum 10 points (‘5 go Quizzing and Everhopefuls’) the scoring positions were now as follows:-

First place and 72 points went to ‘Everhopefuls’, joint second place and just 1 point behind on 71 points were ‘Underachievers’ and ‘5 go quizzing’. Fourth place on 67 points went to Fuzzy Logic with 5th place to ‘Scrambled Eggs’ on 65 points. In 6th place were ‘Penultimately number 9’ on 60 points, 7th place ‘Interlopers’ with 55 points and 8th place ‘Funky Looking Donkeys on 50 points (and just three members in their team). The last three teams had still to play their jokers too!

Round 8 was all about Films and TV ( not my favourite by any means) but ‘Funky Looking Donkeys played their joker and a top score of 9 over the round, a total of 18 points earned for them. ‘Fuzzy Logic were the only team to score 8 with ‘Underachievers’ and ‘5 Go Quizzing’ earning 7 Pts. apiece.

Round 9 the penultimate round was on Literature, Charles Dickens and other classics. Groan……. But amazingly the lowest score was 7 over the ten questions. However the stars of the round were ‘Funky Looking Donkeys’ who remember, having just three members in their team scored an amazing 10 points. Impressive!

Finally we had Pot Luck, Round 10. Five teams scored 9 points( no one scored 10). Fuzzy Logic, Scrambled Eggs, Penultimately No 9, 5 go Quizzing and Interlopers meaning final scores were as follows:

1st Place and winners of the Wine went to ‘ 5 Go Quizzing’ on 95 points . Thank-you to them for donating a bottle of wine to January’s raffle. Very well done to them.

2nd Place ‘Ever Hopefuls’ on 94 points. Almost got there, just needed a stronger performance with their joker!

In joint 3rd Place were ‘Penultimately No 9’ and ‘Underachievers on 93 points. A sterling performance by both teams.

5th Place saw ‘Fuzzy Logic’ earn 91 points another strong performance by them.

6th Place saw ‘Scrambled Eggs’on 89 points

7th Place and 87 points were ‘Interlopers’

8th Place and Winners of the kitkats were ‘Funky Looking Donkeys just one point less on 86 points.

So 9 points separated the 1st and last teams. Nothing in it really. One of the closest quizzes in a long while.

This was followed by our xmas bumper raffle some 13 prizes courtesy of some kindly donated additional prizes. Thankyou to those kind individuals accordingly and well done to the lucky winners.

Now I can confirm the 2020 Quiz dates for your diary. These are as follows:-

Saturday January 25th, Saturday March 14th , Saturday May 9th , Saturday June 20th, September 19th, November 14th . All quizzes start promptly at 8pm.

Don’t forget also our Children’s Xmas Party with Papalarny the amazing Childrens Entertainer, taking place on Saturday 14th December between 10.30 - 1.30 pm. It’s always great fun and usually Santa visits from the North Pole if he’s not too busy.

Tickets remain at £6 a head this year and include an age appropriate gift. Children should be aged 4-11 years but under 4’s don’t have to miss out if there is an accompanying adult. If you’d like to book tickets for your child/children please call Lisa on 07814510154. Food, entertainment and a gift! All for just £6. Don’t delay book your tickets.

Finally, have a great Xmas and we hope to see you soon.

October saw the AGM being held with the Committee being voted in. Firstly I’d like to both thank and welcome those individuals who came along on the evening and kindly joined the committee.  We still have to elect a new chair in the near future although Sarah kindly agreed to stay out for the time being, ably assisted by David Vice-chair.

Now we can move on to the September quiz which regrettably Took place after the deadline for the October magazine. It’s not that I write really slowly ( Honest!)

It was not the busiest night, mainly due to a couple of teams being on holiday. So with 7 teams we commenced what can only be named “ A Night to Remember”. If you’re wondering what momentous occasion needed to be named so austerely then read on.

Following the usual format of 10 sets of 10 questions and a joker to play on one round, where you effectively double the points scored, the quiz commenced with Kevin our quizmaster appearing to be a little kinder than usual. In fact in the first General Knowledge Round,  4 teams scored a maximum 10 points.  These being Strictly Quizzical, Weekenders, Fuzzy Logic and Underachievers. The second round was somewhat harder with just three teams getting all 10 correct, Strictly Quizzical, We thought it was Speed dating, and finally Underachievers who by playing their joker, earned a maximum 20 points. Wow!

Round 3 saw things get tougher again, this time no 10 pointers, and only Penultimately no 9 scored  9 points. The fourth round saw that result repeated again by Penultimately no 9 leaving the top three teams at this stage with Underachievers on 45 points, Penultimately no 9 with 42 points and Strictly Quizzical on 36 points.

Round 5 was a really tough round with a top score of 7 points earned by one team only, Strictly Quizzical. Round 6 saw three teams score 8 correct answers. Late Again, Underachievers and Penultimately No 9.   Round 7 however saw Fuzzy Logic and Weekenders score 9 points with the former playing their joker and scoring 18 points total. Positions at this stage were now first place the Underachievers  on 66 points, second, We thought it was Speed Dating on 59 points and third place Strictly Quizzical just a point behind on 58 points. Very exciting and still all to play for.

Round 8 saw two teams score maximum points and these were Strictly Quizzical and We thought it was Speed Dating. Round 9 however saw every single team score 10. I don’t think that’s ever happened before or if so certainly not for a long time. Weekenders cannily played their joker thus earning 20 points. So the final round left it all to play for and with many teams vying for top spot some 5 teams scored a maximum ten points. Strictly Quizzical, Late Again with their joker ( so 20 points) We thought it was Speed Dating, Underachievers and Penultimately Number 9 with final positions as follows in reverse order:-

7th Fuzzy Logic on 82 points which is not a bad score at all. To make matters worse yours truly forgot to purchase the commiseration chocolate to sweeten the loss so an IOU had to be issued!

6th, Penultimately Number 9, despite all their top scoring rounds they managed just 86 points. Rounds 5 and 7 scuppered them.

5th, Strictly Quizzical on 88 points rounds 6 and 7 restricting their final score.

4th, We thought this was Speed Dating on 89 points. Just 14 points on their joker in round 6 and lower scores in rounds 4 and 7 lost them 2nd place. ( Sorry David! )

3rd, Late Again, a very good team scored 90 points and a maximum score with their joker in round 10 propelled them up the rankings.

2nd place went to Weekenders. On 94 points. They also scored maximum with their joker in round 9.

1st Place and this is why the event was so named “A night to remember” went to “ Underachievers” .

Yes that’s my team! I’d like to say it was all due to me but of course it wasn’t and it’s called a night to remember because I am unsure that the stars will ever align so perfectly again. My thanks go to Matt, Bex, Pops, Grant, Keith, Patricia and Graham who somehow got a lot of questions right. Woohoo!!!!!

Trust me I am not crowing. I just can’t believe it’s finally happened and I seriously question it happening again. We’re not called the Underachievers for nothing.

Now if you have any spare time on Saturday 8th November why not pop along to Wickham Bishops Village Hall for a Charity Clairvoyant evening from 6.30pm. Article Published in the April 2019 Edition of Maldon Life Magazine

With our next quiz due on Saturday 6th April I wanted first to let you know how our last quiz on 23rd February went. ( It was unfortunately too late in the month for the March edition). With a clash of local events that evening unfortunately numbers were down but we didn’t let that affect anything. Kevin was ready with his 100 questions based on the following subjects. Round 1, General Knowledge, round 2, Politics, round 3, A mix of Poets and General Knowledge, Round 4 A mix of London Underground Stations and U.S. States. Round 5 was based on James Bond films, round 6, World geography, round 7 the letter G, ie all answers had to start with the letter g. Round 8 was triple words and so that you understand what that meant one of the questions was. What was Viv Nicholson’s Mantra? Yes you got it. Spend, Spend , Spend. Round 9 was on Football Managers and Car Manufacturers and round 10 Pot Luck. My least favourite round mainly because I think it should be renamed No Luck.

Anyway with 8 teams fighting for glory at the first marking of papers, team Funky Looking Donkeys pulled into an early lead with 41 points having played their joker on round 4 and scoring a round best of 18 points (9x2) with it. The Underachievers were the highest scorers in round 1 though they failed to play their joker so only 9 points earned. Round 2 highest scorers on 9 points were Scrambled egg and Good Neighbours jointly. Round three highest scorers were Late again with 8 points but many teams scored poorly here. Poets were definitely not our thing. So after four rounds and in second place came Late Again (having played their joker) and in third place came Team Densa, on 35 points ( clearly not denser at this stage anyway) and again having played their joker.

There was still plenty to play for at this stage and not many teams had played their jokers. After a nice break eating and drinking our goodies we continued with round 5. Funky Looking Donkeys continued their strong showing with a maximum of 10 on this round, a magnificent showing as a few teams scored just 1 or 2 points here. Clearly not many James Bond fans about. Round 6 honours went to Late Again who scored 9 points. Round 7 top place went to Densa who scored a maximum 10 points and papers were again passed to Kevin for marking.

So at this stage the team still leading everyone was Funky Looking Donkeys on 65 points with Late Again, hot on their heels on 62 points. However Densa were pushed out of their third place into 4th by Good Neighbours on 57 points. Still all to play for.

Round 8 saw The Underachievers score the most points again with 9 having wasted their joker with a measly 12 points on round 4. Round 9 saw the honours shared with maximum 10s scored by The Underachievers, Team 5 , Scrambled Egg and Team of two Bonnie and Clyde. Wow! Clearly a popular (easy) round.

Round 10 saw Good Neighbours, Funky Looking Donkeys, and Densa each score a best score of 8 each leaving final Positions as follows:-

Winners with an overall score of 89 points were Funky Looking Donkeys. Well done to them. Having been a team of many years standing at our quiz nights I believe this is their first win and it was well deserved on the evening. They seemed delighted to receive their 6 bottles of wine. In second place on 84 points came Late Again only just pipped at the post. Third place went to Good Neighbours on 78 points with fourth going to Densa on 75 points. In joint fifth place came The Underachievers one of their best showings for a while with 74 points ( it could have been so different if we’d used our joker wisely!) along with team Scrambled egg who did a little better with their joker. In 7th place came Bonnie and Clyde, didn’t they do well just two of them, earning 67 points but just 10 with their joker on round 9. Last but not least came Team 5 on 63 points who were happy with their chocolate bars. It certainly sweetens the blow. Whilst scores were down this time it didn’t lessen the enjoyment. In fact there was a lovely fun atmosphere all evening and with numbers down but plenty of raffle prizes there were certainly plenty of happy people.

However can I please thank the following people for adding to the evening and generally helping out. Firstly Kevin. What a quizmaster he is. Then there is Sue Mason who helped me collect monies at the door and sell raffle tickets. She was a really great help. I mustn’t forget Mike Frederick who always helps get the chair trolleys out and locks up when he’s there and of course Jim our wonderful caretaker who sets up beforehand so that it’s all ready when we arrive. What stars they all are.

Right now I have to remind you that if you want to hold a party or make a booking don’t forget to book in plenty of time. The last few weeks have seen several children’s parties booked moving into the summer. Don’t be late we’d hate to have to let you down.

Now don’t forget our next quiz is on April 6th at 8pm. Teams of up to 8 and priced at £4 per head for teams players aged over 16 years of age. There is no need to book but you do need to think of a good name. My favourite this time was Densa. Wish I’d thought of it.

Have a look at the website or call me on 07823777201 if you have any queries.

Well our first quiz of the year on January 26th turned out to be a good night for fish and aquatic creatures rather than quizzers but as expected, the more intrepid amongst us made our way to the centre for another interesting evening with Kevin Briggs, Quizmaster Extraordinaire.  I was fortunate enough to arrive prior to the worst onslaught but those arriving from 7.40 pm onwards it definitely looked as if they had swum there or at very best had gone through a car wash. ( and not in their cars). I was impressed with their resilience and determination not to be thwarted in getting their regular quizfix.

Unfortunately a couple of teams were absent due to illness but we were fortunate enough to have one new team arrive and numbers whilst down, were certainly respectable.

Kevin as usual asked the questions in his pacey manner and before we knew it we were at the end of the first four sets of ten questions and papers were handed in for marking.  Because we had collected money for entrance at the door everyone was able to enjoy an uninterrupted break to enjoy their wine, drinks and food. Early indicators showed Pieces of Eight in 1st Place, ( having played their joker) Rubinsteins, a new team in second ( again having played their joker) with joint third going to Bill and Ricky, Fuzzy Logic and Good Neighbours, non of whom had played theirs.
After the second set of questions positions altered in that Bill and Ricky now led the competition, 4+3 and Rubinsteins in joint second place and yours truly with The Unachievers in Fourth just two points behind. (How did that happen? )

However all too soon and as usual, the last three sets rearranged the final order. Here it is. Overall winners were Burns Night Hangover, Clearly they weren’t suffering too much though or if they were, it didn’t impact performance. They scored 18 points with their joker and 96 out of a possible 110 total, to win the evenings wine. As there were only five in their team they kindly donated one of their bottles of wine as a prize for the February Raffle. Thankyou and a Very Well Done to them. In joint second place, came Fuzzy Logic and One Generation both earning 16 points with their joker and 91 points overall. 4th Place went to Bill and Ricky with another 16 points earned on their joker.
In Fifth place (89 points) came Pieces of Eight, and earning 18 points on their joker in round 1 definitely helped.  In 6th place came Rubinsteins just behind on 88 points and 16 points with their joker. 7th place was awarded to Good Neighbours again just 1 point behind on 87 points and just 12 of those with their joker round they could have been far higher! Eighth place went to 4 + 3 even earning the maximum with their joker giving them a total of 85 points. Excellent use of the joker! Finally in joint 9th place came Penultimately Number 9 and The Underachievers both on 83 points. It all went wrong for us in rounds 8-10. So who would earn the right to eat the commiseration Mars bars? Two tie break questions later and it was Penultimately Number 9 who won ( or should I say lost) the day and the Mars Bars. I was feeling pretty smug as to date we’ve avoided them twice and yes; it was more luck than judgement.

Notwithstanding this all the teams did really well and seemed to really enjoy the evening in spite of the weather no doubt the eight prizes in the raffle helped this good feeling with most tables winning a prize.

Results for the February quiz will appear in April’s edition as articles are written before they are held.

Our next quiz is due on April 6th at 8 pm as usual. Put that date in your diaries and on that note just a gentle reminder to everybody, please help put your chairs and tables away at the close of the evening and take your rubbish with you.

Now just to let you know about an offering from one of our longest standing clients.

Where did January go and how are those resolutions going? Quite well it would seem as the centre seems awfully busy again at the moment. Don’t forget it’s never too late to take up or start new interests just because January has moved on be brave and go for it. Life’s too short to have regrets about what one didn’t do.

Another person who has been busy is Webmaster and Vice Chair David, he has totally redesigned our website. Whilst all of us were enjoying turkey and trimmings he was slaving over a hot laptop. Okay, well maybe not on Xmas day exactly. Anyway to cut a long story short he’s done a super job. The new site is clean and fresh and has some wonderful new photos of the facilities, courtesy of a volunteer local photographer and friend of the centre. Thank-you to him and David for all their hard work.  Take a look on Westmaldoncommunitycentre.co.uk when you can.

Our next quiznight of 2019 is on Saturday, February 23, with the usual start time of 8pm. and naturally there’s plenty to play for. Kevin the quizmaster will be setting his usual 10 sets of 10 questions to keep you on your toes. You’ll also have a joker to play on your chosen joker round (hopefully the one where you know all the answers) when you then have the opportunity to double your points. Choose well and you’re on your way to winning. Teams of up to 8 persons allowed although teams of four have been known to win so don’t worry! Cost £4 per head (under 16s free) so bring the family. Most Important. Don’t forget to bring your drinks and nibbles to ensure you really enjoy the evening. Prize for the winning table (6 Bottles of wine) and commiseration chocolate for the team with least number of points on the night. No need to book, just come along and enjoy the evening. you might even win the raffle!

Finally, it’s time to wish Ann Fisher the W.I. representative who has sat on the committee for quite a while now a fond farewell. Ann is moving out of the county and sadly has to leave us. Thank-you to her for all her efforts and good humour. She will really be missed. Our very best wishes go with her.

West Maldon Community Centre News.

Well the children’s Xmas party has been and gone. David and Lisa have finally recovered from all their hard work getting it ready (along with Father Xmas who as usual made his special visit to us) aided by a number of helpers. Thank you to them all for making this once again a lovely afternoon for the children. Whilst numbers were lower this year, those who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves dancing to songs played, and watching the magic performed by Mr Happy. Roll on the next one!

Now before I really get into my flow let me just say “Happy New Year to everyone, Readers, Clients and friends alike. Hopefully you’ve all enjoyed a really good Xmas break enjoying the good health which is so vital to us all.

Likewise I trust you’ve not indulged too much because historically January is that month in the New Year where having taken stock of ourselves after Xmas we have also made resolutions we intend to keep, on the road to good intentions. You’ll know the one and if not; I can give you directions. As most of you have SAT Navs these days just punch in CM96YH and before you know it you’ll be at the Community Centre in Sunbury Way, Keeble Park Maldon. Here you’ll be able to find something to aid you with those resolutions be it Weight Loss Programmes, Get Fit, keep fit Programmes ( for all ages). Playing a new sport. Returning to an old favourite sport, Dancing, Martial arts, Joining a group to learn a language, get your children playing more sport or learning to dance. Just a few ideas for starters. ( and don’t forget the regular quiznights we run). There’s also plenty more on the website, have a browse and see what you like. Remember it’s not just the activity you’ll enjoy the added bonus is you get to meet likeminded mortals who often become friends.

Or you might like to get involved with your local community. Join the Committee here. We always need new people with fresh ideas. Or you just might like to visit Councillor Flo Shaughnessy at her monthly surgery on the 1st Saturday each month between 10 and 12 noon to discuss matters of concern to you.

Whatever the reason. Come along and see what we have to offer. Or visit our website Www.westmaldoncommunitycentre.co.uk To look at what’s on and when. It differs from week to week. It’s your Community, make the most of it.
